A brief outline of Hand Engraving The item to be engraved is fixed securely in a clamp or vice. The basic outlines of the design are drawn entirely by hand onto the metal using a metal scriber which leaves a faint outline on the metal surface. Other than using a pair of dividers for marking circles accurately, or a ruler for straight lines there is absolutely no machinery involved. Starting with the main outlines and shapes the metal is cut away using an engravers burin. The shape, depth and width of the cut may be varied whilst cutting. The design is engraved by paring the metal away cut by cut until the final details and shading have been added and the engraving is complete.
